‘More confidence’ is not your goal.
Say what??
‘But Lynn, you’ve just run a programme called Claim your Leadership Confidence Week and you run a 90-day programme called Lead with Confidence. Have you had a change of heart?’
No, I haven’t, but here’s the thing:
When your goal is fuzzy, you won’t achieve it.
‘I want more confidence’ is fuzzy.
When talented leaders come to me (and many of them do) saying this is what they want, we take a big step back and examine all areas of their leadership lives to see what’s happening.
I can immediately spot the patterns, blindspots and strengths that are underused or overworked. I can hear the voice of the inner critic getting in the way and the tactics that ‘should’ work but don’t.
I can see the huge amount of untapped opportunity in everyone I work with—even if they can’t see it themselves. On that note, have you noticed that it’s always the talented people—the people who care—who want to grow and develop? The poor leaders rarely do. They just continue in their own bubble of denial, blame or ignorance or are too fearful of what might be uncovered if they ‘put themselves out there’ to learn.
But I digress.
If you want something, be crystal clear on what you want.
‘I want to be less busy’ is not a goal. (State what you want, not what you don’t – it’s easier for your brain.)
‘I want more time with my family’ is slightly better – but it’s still not a clear enough goal.
‘I want more confidence’ is vague.
Instead, ask yourself: ‘What would more confidence enable me to do that I’m not doing now?’ or ‘If I had more confidence (in that thing), who would I start to become as a leader?
Once you’re clear, you can make your plan. Or I can help you with it. That’s my zone of genius.
My next Lead with Confidence programme starts in September.
There is nothing better than working with an intimate group of leaders like you, where you can be yourself, get the right things done, and become the leader you want to become (and we’ll turn that into something crystal clear!)
