Three Tips for Grounded Confidence

| 24 January 2025

Confidence isn’t about being the loudest in the room or having all the answers.

We all know a leader who talks for the sake of talking, interrupts others and creates confusion everywhere they go.

Often the most impressive leaders are supremely competent but not the most vocal. Their grounded confidence comes from within. You might be a leader like that.  Quietly assured, aligned with your values and open to growth, learning and listening.

If confidence is something you want more of, start by getting specific.

Be clear on why you want more confidence: I want more confidence so that (add the outcome you want).

E.g ‘I want to be more confident to keep the SLT meetings outcome focused and on track so that we can make clear decisions instead of discussing things endlessly but doing nothing’.

These three actions will help you, too.

  1. Clarify Your Core Beliefs: Ask yourself, “What do I stand for as a leader?” Write down three values that guide your actions. And then see how you live them daily.  (It’s no good saying you believe in empowering others if you never delegate,  constantly micromanage or ‘rescue’).
  2. Anticipate Success: Confidence grows with evidence. Anticipate success before every conversation or meeting because I guarantee that it will change everything for you (but you must do it consistently).
  3. Challenge the Inner Critic –  Separate ‘inner critic’ thoughts from facts. Most of the time, your inner critic is a liar.

Grounded confidence isn’t about perfection. It’s knowing how to handle your self-doubt when it appears. It’s about knowing yourself and showing up as the best version of you.

This week’s activity: Work on that phrase I gave you above.   I want more confidence so that I……..(add your outcome here). Choose one thing for now and then decide how you are going to find that confident version of you.
