What are you saying to yourself?
The language we use to ourselves and about ourselves is important. It can mean the difference between getting what we want and not getting what we want.
A leader I’m working with wants to be more visible and promote herself more – because that’s what she knows leads to success. But the idea of promoting herself and talking about ‘I’ feels icky to her.
And she definitely doesn’t want to become one of those people who talks incessantly about themselves but says nothing much of value.
So that’s why she’s stopped herself from being more visible up until now: The fear of becoming ‘like them’.
So what to do?
Firstly, we change the words ‘self-promotion’ to something else. Words that feel authentic to her; words that excite her and make her say ‘yes – I can do that’.
So off she goes with a spring in her step and an opportunity this week to practise (because action leads to confidence, not the other way round), a way to share her talents that don’t feel icky and a new mantra that will get her in ‘the visibility zone’ every day.
Her visibility will increase. Her confidence will grow and more people will appreciate her incredible talent and ability to make a difference (she’ll no longer be the best kept secret in the organisation!).
Words create worlds.
What we say about ourselves matters.
To your success always (in your own words.)
