‘Wrong way round’ thinking
Here’s an example of three thoughts that are the wrong way around.
‘I’ll do it when I have more time’
‘I’ll do it when I’m more confident’
‘I’ll do it when I feel motivated.’
Here’s why they are the wrong way around:
‘I don’t have enough time’ becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy of (you’ve guessed it) not enough time. If it’s that important, you’ll find the time – unless something else is getting in the way (‘I don’t want to fail’, for example, ‘so I’ll keep busy with that ‘easier stuff’.) That’s not a lack of time. That’s a lack of self-belief or skill/knowledge. (And I hold my hands up – been on that path many a time.)
And it’s all fixable!
‘I’ll do it when I’m more confident. Action leads to confidence, not the other way around. One tiny step in the right direction is all you need. Start before you’re ready, or keep waiting forever.
Fixable!
‘‘I’ll do it when I feel motivated.’ If you aren’t motivated, tell yourself, ‘I’ll just do five minutes on that thing’. Before you know it, you’ll be well and truly stuck into ‘the thing’. And think how great you’ll feel afterwards. This idea has worked like a dream for me on so many occasions—exercise, writing that email, writing my book.
Fixable!
When you join my upcoming Lead with Confidence programme, you’ll find more time, confidence, motivation, and much more. This is no leadership ‘quick fix’—it’s about quality time to think well, reflect on what you want to change and then make it happen – no platitudes, fluff or navel-gazing.
And when you do all this with an intimate community of like-minded leaders, it’s a breath of fresh air. You get encouragement and support from like-minded leaders who have your back. You don’t have to worry about what you might say or do because there are no hidden agendas.
To your success always.
